Kakariki Dietary Requirements

At ABC, our Kakarikis are fed with small parrot seeds. We also provide a high-quality crumble for necessary protein and nutrients to help them stay healthy. All these requirements are sold in our store.

You should also offer your Kakariki a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots and broccoli, as they add vitamins to your parrot’s diet.

Fresh, clean water is a must; Kakarikis living indoors require Vitamin D3 and Calcium Supplement. At ABC, we use ‘Liquid Gold.’

Kakariki Cage and Accessories

cage is vital for your Kakariki; there should be plenty of room for your bird to stretch its wings and move around. Minimum size of 40x45cm is recommended. More importantly, it is a playground or an area where your parrot can be free.

Kakarikis need to be out of their cage to be kept super friendly, and at ABC, we provide a variety of playgrounds and stands perfect for your feathered friend.

Check out the videos below of our Bird Cage area and some playgrounds.

Breeding Kakarikis

Kakarikis are easy to breed; they breed 2-3 times a year between November and January. They can reach maturity as young as six months old, but it is recommended not to breed until one year old. Each clutch usually consists of 2-6 eggs. The eggs hatch approximately 26 days later, and the chicks leave the nest at 6-7 weeks.

cockatiel-sized nest box lined with parrot nesting material available from ABC is suitable to use for breeding.

If you are more interested in breeding Kakarikis, we also have nice pairs specifically for breeding. They are typical $199 – $299, and Kakarikis are easy to determine sex, so our experienced staff can guarantee you have a male and female (Males are bigger and have noticeably larger beaks than the females).

Kakariki Parrots

The Kakariki is native to New Zealand. They are confident, humorous birds who are easygoing and warm-hearted. They love to play, so placing a large variety of toys is necessary. They are known for swinging upside-down in the tops of their cages.

Kakarikis are good-natured and excellent with children; they are easy to train and can learn several words. They grow about 25 cm and live up to 15-20 years.

The Kakariki comes in a variety of colours; the most common is completely green with red colouring above the eyes and red cheeks. Some other colour mutations are Lutino (yellow with red above the eyes and red cheeks), Pied (same as the common green Kakariki with some bright yellow colouring, usually on the wings), and Cinnamon (a lighter, more pale green body)
